Microsoft founder and former CEO Bill Gates announced last week that he and his wife, Melinda Gates, would end their marriage. The astonishing decision has been on the agenda of the world. It has become one of the most talked-about events on social media. Xiaomi, the Chinese technology company that did not want to miss this opportunity, made a very meaningful post.
Intentionally or not, Xiaomi targeted Bill and Melinda in its advertising campaign. In a post on Twitter, gates attempted highly controversial marketing by using a sensitive issue such as the family’s divorce.
Xiaomi’s official Twitter account serving the United Kingdom posted a mind-boggling tweet for the Xiaomi Mi 11 yesterday. Highlighting the fast charging feature of the device, the company also made sure to have Bill Gates touched in this post. To everyone’s surprise, the message read:
“Breaking up with your billionaire wife may not be the smartest choice. However, our Mi 11 is fully charged in 45 minutes using a 55W wired turbocharger. So you’re always ready to leave.”
Following the backlash, Xiaomi UK was forced to remove the tweet from Twitter. But someone had already taken screenshots of this scandalous exchange. The company did not issue any statements on the matter but did not even issue an apology.
Another mind-boggling point of sharing was that the tweet was shared via an iPhone. The issue has been criticized by social media users almost more than a reference to the split between Melinda and Bill Gates.
