Dangerous patent for facial recognition technology

Facial recognition technology has edged in the UNITED States for criminal detection, but how reliable technology it is remains controversial. The facial recognition patent obtained by Clearview AI, which previously scanned photos on platforms such as YouTube and Facebook without consent, has alarming features in this sense.

Facial recognition comes with criminal detection and dating security?

Although facial recognition and criminal detection seem like a positive development, Amazon, which has tried this before, has failed in this regard with its facial recognition technology algorithm. Clearview AI’s algorithm based on nearly 3 billion photos it made via YouTube and Facebook was interpreted as a dangerous step.

Last year, after this scandal was revealed by the New York Times, the firm announced that the algorithm would not be used outside government departments. The patent that emerged today states that this algorithm can be used in many areas, from job recruitment to dating programs.

In fact, these articles in the patent were written to determine the potential of the algorithm in question. Although the company says this software will not be used outside government departments, the capabilities included in the patent are alarming.

Possible uses of Clearview AI facial recognition technology include the ability to “grant or deny access to a person, facility, venue or device,” according to the patent.

The technology also has the potential to be used to identify a “sex offender” or “homeless people.” Again, the technology could be used to change the way law enforcement approached the suspect in certain situations by checking whether the captured suspects had a “mental problem or disability”.

In addition to criminal detection, this facial recognition technology can also be used for dating apps. So far, all the features listed in the patent will be available for matching for dating apps like Tinder. According to this, the algorithm will be able to determine the person’s criminal history through the photo, whether they are homeless, whether they have a mental problem.

In short, the algorithm, which can access one’s private information and use them in both security and social life, has already caused a huge controversy in the United States.
