Apple May Knock on Samsung’s Door to 5nm Chip Production

Although TSMC’s production capacity is high, it cannot keep up with Apple’s demands. Some analysts reported that Apple will shake hands with Samsung on this issue.

Apple recently announced the Mac Mini, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models powered by the M1 processor it has specially designed. These chips, also known as Apple Silicon, use TSMC’s 5nm manufacturing technology as you know. We know that Apple is also collaborating with TSMC on Apple and iPad chips. However, this situation seems to have become a problem.

The full production capacity of Taiwanese TSMC is sufficient to meet the supply demands of a certain number of companies. Some companies even reserve space and make deals for certain capacities in advance. Apple demands more capacity than ever, making it very difficult for TSMC to keep up.

Based on the new report released by Business Korea, Apple is looking for another partner beyond TSMC to manufacture its chips. As you can imagine, Samsung is at the top of these candidates.

We mentioned that Samsung recently started supplying chips based on 5nm fabrication. In this context, Apple can knock on Samsung’s door for M1 SoCs and cooperate with both TSMC and Samsung to meet their demands.
