Warner Bros. is careful to release the entire 2021 film on HBO Max. Now the studio has released the first trailer for Space Jam: A New Legacy. According to the trailer, the film will have more sci-fi elements than you think.
The film is set in a “Matrix hell” where LeBron James has to play basketball against a supervillain-like Goon Squad to save his son. James is joining Bugs Bunny and his friends in his team. But the references go much further than that. For starters, James relies on the help of The Iron Giant’s namesake robot. The film also salutes the technological advancement of the 25 years since the original Space Jam with Michael Jordan. Tune Squad transforms from straight cartoons to CG animated characters (or, in James’s case, a real body).
Players get scores similar to a video game, and the screen above the field even shows a number of social media followers. A New Legacy will be in cinemas both on HBO Max and on July 16. We don’t expect this to be a superior cinematic experience. But it also won’t cost more to watch than a Max subscription. It seems like a dream to go to the movies because we’re still stuck at home because of the epidemic. If the new Space Jam proves a success on HBO Max, it could both strengthen the service’s profile and lead to bigger-name movies in Max. You can watch the trailer here.
