The Golden Globes, awarded annually to film and television series, are considered one of the most prestigious awards available. The awards are presented by a team of 87 people known as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). It is the third most-watched awards ceremony after the Golden Globes, Oscars, and Grammys.
The ceremony, which is broadcast live on television every year, unfortunately, came up with other topics this year. Celebrities and the public are accusing the Golden Globes of racism.
NBC, Netflix, and Amazon pull out of Golden Globes
The focus of the criticism is the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which determines awards. The union is accused of ignoring racial diversity in the 87-member team and of not having a black member for 20 years. As the public and the art world reacted, tom cruise returned his past Golden Globe awards.
A similar reaction came from NBC, the address where the awards ceremony has long aired. In a statement, NBC Media said, “We believe the Hollywood Foreign Press Association needs meaningful reform. However, a change of this magnitude requires time and effort. We believe HYBB needs time to do this correctly,” he said, adding that the ceremony would not be on the channel for some time. If changes are made, the ceremony will be back on the channel in 2023.
Netflix and Amazon, which were involved in the discussion, also backed the criticism, saying they would withdraw from the organization. It’s a question of when the Golden Globes will complete their preparations and re-perform the ceremony.
