The UK plans to use the National Health System’s (NHS) phone app as a COVID-19 vaccination passport, which will allow its citizens to travel internationally this summer.

“Regarding vaccine certificates, I can confirm that this (vaccination passport) will be in the NHS practice that people use to arrange appointments so that you can be seen to have been vaccinated or tested without the practice,” British Transport Minister Grant Shapps told Sky News.

Countries around the world are considering some options to prove that the COVID-19 vaccine has been vaccinated to allow travel, but airports, border agencies, and airlines are concerned that a global standard cannot be met.

So-called vaccination passports range from digital certification in the European Union (EU) to QR code that can be scanned, to an NHS phone app in the UK or a piece of paper in some countries.
