A large container ship ran aground in the Suez Canal. The ship is believed to have run aground after it spun out of control due to strong winds.
The ship completely blocked passage through the canal, one of the world’s trading arteries. There’s heavy ship traffic on both sides of the canal.
The megaship Ever Given, which weighs 220 tons and is 400 meters long, was reportedly stuck at the southern end of the canal. Attempts to float the ship again were unsuccessful.
Initial reports indicated the ship was thought to have lost power, but Evergreen Marine Corp told AFP they believed the vessel was stranded by the wind.
The company said it had appealed to the ship’s owner to report the cause of the accident and was in contact with authorities to help the vessel.
Egypt’s meteorological services reported sandstorms in the area on Tuesday, with winds gusting to 50 kilometres per hour at one point.
The ship’s crew was said to be in good condition.
