A subway collapsed on an overpass in Mexico City, Killing at least 23 people and hospitalized 49, authorities said.
A subway overpass collapsed Monday night at a local time in Mexico City, Mexico.
Footage screened by local media showed the overpass collapsing while there was a subway and cars were passing underneath it. Early indications are that 23 people were killed and 49 wounded were transported to hospitals across Mexico City, officials said. Governor Sheinbaum announced that children were among the dead.
Local media say the five-meter overpass, which is undergoing maintenance work, had wagons on it at the time of the collapse. International news agencies serve eerie photos of a downed subway car.
Footage posted to social media shows the other end of a carriage stuck on an overpass on the road. The footage showed crews reaching the carriages with the help of ladders and continuing their work.
Mexico City mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said in a Twitter message from the scene that firefighters and emergency crews were continuing their work.
