A woman in the US has used the controversial deepfake technology of recent days to get her daughter into the cheerleading squad. A mother named Raffaela Spone was arrested after admitting to spreading fake images of her daughter’s opponents to audition for the cheerleading squad.
A mother in the US has created deepfake images of her daughter’s rivals to get her daughter into the cheerleading squad. In videos and photos, the woman made it look like she was smoking and drinking.
Raffaela Spone allegedly sent deepfake videos, photos to team coaches showing other teenagers drinking, smoking and even depicting them naked so her daughter could join a cheerleading team.
Similar complaints were listed repeatedly after police received the first anonymous report of the incident.
Authorities reviewed the complaints and determined that the videos were produced by Spone through IP address tracking.
The woman, whose phone call logs are also being held as evidence, has been charged with cyberstalking.
Police took no action against Spone’s daughter because there was no evidence she knew about the incident.
WHAT IS DEEPFAKE?
Deepfake technology, a type of software that makes it possible to place one person’s face in another’s body and manipulate audio recordings, puts the operations of individuals, companies and even countries at risk.
First called Deepfake by Reddit users in 2017, this method was developed as a science that explores the in-depth understanding of digital images and the taking over of machines in the visual work that humans once did.
But the technology, which has been used by cybercriminals for illegal purposes in recent years, poses serious risks in many areas, from financial markets to politics.
Deepfake technology, which started with the aim of using actors who had previously died in Hollywood in video, became an application for amateur versions of mobile devices with the development of artificial intelligence.
In 2017, the dark side of technology was revealed when the faces of some celebrities, including Michelle Obama, Ivanka Trump and Emma Watson, were used in adult films.
