Tanzanian President John Magufuli has died at the age of 61.
Magufuli died of heart problems at a hospital in the capital Dar es Selam, Vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan announced on state television.
Magufuli had not been seen in public for two weeks and rumours had begun that he was dead.
Opposition politicians said the head of state contracted Covid-19 last week, but this information has not been confirmed.
Magufuli was one of Africa’s main coronavirus skeptics and recommended prayers and herbal remedies in the fight against the disease.
Following the president’s death, 14 days of national mourning were declared in the country and flags were lowered at half-mast.
According to tanzania’s mainland, Hassan will be sworn in as the new head of state and will remain president until Magufuli’s five-year term, which began last year, expires.
Magufuli was last seen in public on February 27, but Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa said the president was “healthy and working hard.”
