The legal team of Derek Chauvin, the former police officer who killed George Floyd in the US, has requested a retrial for alleged misconduct by a jury.
Lawyers for Derek Chauvin, the former police officer convicted of killing George Floyd in his trial last month, filed a petition in a Minneapolis court demanding a new trial on several grounds, including the jury’s misconduct.
Chauvin’s lawyers said he should be retried for “abuse of discretion that deprives the defendant of a fair trial, misconduct by the prosecutor’s office and jury, errors of law in the trial and violations of the court .”
Chauvin’s lawyer said, “The jury abused its position, was threatened or intimidated, they felt racial pressure during the trials. Chauvin’s constitutional rights to legal process and a fair trial have been violated.’
The Minneapolis court’s decision on the application will be announced in the coming period.
