Footage has emerged of a senior diplomat masturbating on his female colleague’s desk at Parliament House after a recent Liberal Party employee in Australia, Brittany Higgins, revealed she had been raped in Parliament.
Harassment and rape cases have long been on the agenda in Australia. This time, the revelation of footage of a senior Liberal Party bureaucrat masturbating at the female MP’s desk caused outrage in the country.
The footage went viral on social media after the Australian newspaper and Channel 10 announced they had set up a Facebook Messenger group where several staff members shared images of their sexual acts at Parliament House.
An unnamed former MP who leaked the footage also said some government employees used a place on the upper floor of the building, known as a prayer or meditation room, for sexual intercourse and even brought sex workers there. The former MP also said employees throw sexual photos at each other and said: “There is a culture of men in Parliament who think they can do anything they want. They don’t believe they broke the law. They are morally bankrupt.”
Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who has long been criticised for failing to intervene in harassment and rape in his party, called the incident ‘disgusting and sickening’ and said he had been identified and immediately terminated. Morrison also pledged to do more to involve women in politics.
