In South Africa, 4,000 students were evacuated after a fire on Table Mountain reached the University of Cape Town campus yesterday.
The fire, which broke out on the slopes of Mount Masa and damaged university buildings at the University of Cape Town, was not brought under control despite intense interventions by the city fire brigade, according to national media reports.
The fire, which first damaged a café at the Rodes Memorial, later destroyed several of the university’s landmark buildings.
All activities of the university were suspended and 4,000 students were evacuated.
Some firefighters were injured and taken to hospital.
