Police in Houston, Texas, US, shot a 1-year-old black American baby in the head at a gas station while chasing a robber. The seriously injured baby is reportedly fighting for his life in intensive care.
Police chase a robber in Houston, Texas, U.S., on March 3, and shot a 1-year-old black American baby named Legend Smalls in the head with a gas station fire. The robber was killed by the shooting.
Houston Deputy Police Chief Troy Finner said the slain suspect jumped into Smalls’ car and police believe the suspect was trying to hijack the car, NBC News reported.
“My son didn’t deserve this,” the baby’s mother, Daisha Smalls, said yesterday with her lawyer Benjamin Crump about the incident.
“He still has bullet fragments in his head and he’s in intensive care,” Smalls said of his son’s condition. And I just want my baby to be safe… I just want him to get better.”
Smalls’ attorneys said the baby had been on a ventilator for more than 10 days and had multiple seizures.
Legend Smalls’ skull was removed due to brain swelling caused by the bullet, according to reports.
Daisha Smalls said the suspect tried to force his way into the car and Legend was inside when he asked her to leave the car.
“The person jumped in my car and the police were right behind him,” Smalls said. They shot at my car before I knew it, and I was just thinking about my son’s life.”
Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo, meanwhile, said police believe Smallls’ car was hijacked.
“One of our officers, concerned for the safety of the mother, fired the weapon assigned to her and shot and killed the suspect. Unfortunately, baby Legend was also shot. Officers at the scene immediately provided first aid to Legend.”
It was announced that the incident was being investigated by law enforcement and special investigation units, and that the city’s prosecutor was also conducting a separate investigation.
