13 people who were treated for a new type of coronavirus (Covid-19) died in a fire in a hospital in the state of Maharashtra in western India.
A fire broke out in the early hours of the morning in the intensive care unit of Vijay Vallabh Hospital in Virar, 70 kilometres north of Mumbai, India, where Covid-19 patients were being treated.
Thirteen patients on ventilator died in the fire caused by an explosion in the ventilation unit.
The fire at the hospital, where 90 patients were being treated, was extinguished, while the surviving patients were transported to nearby hospitals.
Cases of Covid-19, which have reached a record high in India in recent weeks, have brought the country’s already fragile health system to the point of collapse.
Hospitals have difficulty removing the increasing number of patients every day, while the lack of oxygen tanks and some important drugs in the treatment of Covid-19 is causing problems.
In India, 332,518 new cases of Covid-19 were detected in the last 24 hours, while Maharashtra was the state with the most cases recorded with 67,013 cases.
