Search giant Google has announced it has decided to close studios that will develop games for Stadia. The company has open sourced some development tools from Stadia Games & Entertainment.
Last month, Google launched the process of shutting down its game development studios for its Stadia service. The Stadia Games & Entertainment team has open sourced some tools created to help with the development process.
Stadia Games & Entertainment had studios based in Montreal and Playa Vista. Both studios faced the decision to close without the opportunity to develop games for the Stadia service. As a farewell gift, Google made the source code of the development tools used by Stadia Games & Entertainment available on GitHub.
The search giant says its code store called “sge-monorepo” contains nothing about game projects being developed at any of stadia games & entertainment studios. However, let’s also note that these tools are not specific to game development for Stadia.
With the project tools becoming open source, developers at Stadia Games & Entertainment will be able to move them to their next business. It will also be possible for other companies to extract a share for themselves by examining Google’s coding logic.
