Nintendo and Niantic are teaming up again for the AR ‘Pikmin’ game. As you may recall, a few years ago, Nintendo and Niantic Labs teamed up to create Pokemon Go and ignite the augmented reality gaming craze that has ravaged the world. But in the intervening time, this madness subsided.
Now, with a series of puzzle games originally created by Shigeru Miyamoto and based on Nintendo’s Pikmin series, the two teams will try again to create the same craze.
Pikmin AR game will make walking more enjoyable.
Not much is known about the name of the game yet. But it seems the game will be fitness-oriented to “encourage walking, make walking more enjoyable, and incorporate play activities into the walk.”
According to Niantic COO Megan Quinn, Niantic is Nintendo’s exclusive partner for real-world AR apps, and the game will be released later this year.
Nintendo’s Twitter account announced the game, saying, “What would it be like to have a more fun walking experience surrounded by a Pikmin? Explore the real world and create memories with your Pin friends in a new mobile app developed by NianticLabs.” The Tweet also included a pre-registration link.
The new game is the first to be produced by Niantic Tokyo Studio and is the most ambitious of a series of games the two will develop together, according to Nintendo’s press release.
Tatsuo Nomura, president of Niantic Tokyo Studio, said in a Tweet that it was an “unusual” game and would not be called Pikmin Go.
