The App Store case between Epic Games and Apple began in California. Both firms had to make many documents public as evidence. One was how much money Epic made through Fortnite in 2018 and 2019. Published figures revealed just how big a source of money the game is.
According to documents released by Epic Games, the company generated $9 billion in revenue from Fortnite in 2018 and 2019. However, the company declined to disclose the profits it made from the game. All that was known was that Epic Games made a profit of $5.5 billion as a company in 2019 and 2019.
Fortnite leads epic payments
Meanwhile, an Excel file obtained by the Washington Post revealed that Epic’s payments to Microsoft and Sony between January 2017 and October 2019 were overwhelmingly Fortnite’s. The share of other games, especially the Rocket League owned by Epic, was lower.
During that time, Epic, Apple paid $237 million. For comparison, the firm said it paid Microsoft $245 million and Sony $451 million in 2020 alone. This information, described in court, was deliberately released by Epic to show that iOS is not the biggest for Fortnite.
The information in the published documents that Epic Games paid millions of dollars to platform owners means Fortnite is an important weapon in terms of revenue. The firm is understood to have paid a 30 percent store fee on PlayStation and Xbox. That’s why the total amount of money earned from Fortnite is huge.
The case between Epic and Apple will continue for the next three weeks. It’s worth noting that Apple CEO Tim Cook will also testify at hearings on Monday and Thursday.
